Absolutely this can be done. It is the gist of what our product does, but CoexLinks does it under the covers in an extension manager so that it can process 100,000 messages a day, whereas the manual process, or even an automated process that requires storing the messages and then processing and then sending on is likely to take a good deal more processing.
Anyway, to be clear, COEX will let you convert any doclink, viewlink, dblink or anchor link to an NDL file, or alternatively to a Notes URL, since that is preferred by some. It just does it quietly and efficiently. In no way did I mean to suggest that it would be hard to do this yourself, just that for those who want it to happen without changing the design of either a hidden design db or altering lots of apps or talking to each individual who might send a link. For those with more control over the design and a smaller number of messages with links, it makes perfect sense to handle it yourself.
